Group Coaching: What Are You Missing?
Hi Leaders,
What if the real value of group coaching depends less on the format and more on how you show up?
In my latest podcast episode, we explored group coaching as a space where insight can multiply quickly. But only when people are willing to think differently about how they learn.
And this is where hesitation often shows up.
Let’s unpack it.
Simplifying Perspectives
Group coaching can feel like a trade-off.
Less individual attention. Less control. Less certainty about what you will walk away with.
Those concerns are valid. And they point to something deeper.
Most of us enter group settings carrying habits that limit what we take from them. The need to appear competent. The instinct to solve quickly. The belief that development should stay private.
These habits protect your image. They also reduce your learning.
When group coaching works well, something shifts. People stop performing certainty and start noticing patterns in how they think, react, and lead. Insight becomes shared, and that often moves you further, faster.
So the question is: what might you need to unlearn to benefit fully from the room?
Getting Started
If you are considering group coaching or are already part of one, here are three ways to approach it differently:
1. Decide your intention before you join
Are you there to contribute smart answers or to explore better questions?
2. Stay longer with the discomfort
The first answer is often familiar. The insight tends to come after you pause.
3. Use AI to strengthen your reflection
Before a session, ask: What assumptions am I bringing into this conversation?
After a session, ask: Where did I hold back? What challenged my thinking?
AI will not replace the group. It can help you prepare and reflect so the learning stays with you.

A Coaching Opportunity
If you are stepping into a masterminding or group coaching setting, preparation shapes the outcome.
I have created a short 15-minute webinar on how to make the most of your Hot Seat.
Inside, we focus on three things:
- The questions you need to reflect on before your session
- How to phrase your challenge so the group can support you effectively
- How to turn insights into a clear action plan
Masterminding is a group coaching format that can help you get unstuck, especially when you are circling a decision or procrastinating without understanding why. With the right preparation, the session becomes focused, practical, and immediately useful.
I use this approach myself when making important career and business decisions. It builds clarity, courage, and momentum.
If you are ready to explore your next step, I invite you to join the webinar. Bring a pen, paper, and a good question to work on.
Group coaching can be a powerful development space.
The difference is rarely the format. It is how you enter the room.
The more you are willing to question your own habits, the more value you will take with you.
Until next time,
Katy Caroan
